POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for back office functions including patient preparation, support of health care providers, laboratory procedures and clinic in a manner that promotes quality patient care. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Prepare exam rooms, laboratory area and lavatory with supplies before and the start and through the day. Prepare patients for exams including chief complaint and vital signs. Provide assistance with patient exams, minor surgeries and medical procedures. Perform laboratory procedures including, but not limited to, venipuncture, hematocrit, urine chemstrips, microscopic, wet mounts, blood glucose and pregnancy tests. Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including, but not limited to, injections, vaccinations, EKGs, spirometry, audiometry and nebulizer treatments. Triage patients for appointments. Ensure lab specimens are properly labeled, recorded and sent to appropriate outside laboratory. Complete laboratory control sheets according to CHCKC procedures. Fill out lab, x-ray and referral forms according to CHCKC procedures. Provide instructions to patients on the use of medications as directed by the Provider. Assist in telephone refilling of medications. Record medication refills in patient charts. Schedule referral appointments. Provide instruction in home care and give general health information as directed by a provider. Maintain exam rooms and lab in sanitary and good order at all times. Sanitize used equipment with appropriate sterilizing techniques. Provide liaison between receptionists and providers ensuring timely and orderly patient flow throughout the clinic. Follow established procedures for opening and closing the clinic each day. Attend staff meeting and in-service meeting. Participate in agency committees and task force activities. Note that the 2007 hourly rate range for this position is $16.75 to $21.23. This Medical Assistant will work full time as part of a multi-disciplinary team of health care providers to ensure the delivery of quality patient care and treatment at the North Public Health Center. The incumbent will work as a paraprofessional performing delegated patient care functions under the clinical direction of a physician or nurse practitioner. These functions include but are not limited to invasive procedures and medication administration. The practice emphasis for this position is family health and family planning.
Examples of Duties:
Coordinates efficient clinic flow by rooming patients; assists providers with patient care; performs diagnostic screening tests and procedures such as vision and hearing screening, EKG’s
Performs and documents, as directed by a physician and/or advanced registered nurse practitioner, blood draws, medication administration and specimen collection.
Provides clients with health care education information through individual instruction and written materials, including providing education on birth control methods and pregnancy options.
Monitors, requisitions and stocks routine clinic supplies; cleans, prepares and maintains examination/ treatment rooms and laboratory areas
Enters patient information into tracking systems and chronic disease registries.
As directed by a provider, calls in prescriptions to pharmacies, makes follow-up appointments and refers patients for speciality and follow-up care.
Using a patient registration system, assists with scheduling, registering and checking in patients.
Interviews clients to obtain and record medical, dietary and social history.
Performs and documents adult and child anthropometric measurements.
Attends training and responds to emergency situations within the clinic supporting health care providers and emergency personnel.
Qualifications:
Working knowledge of asepsis and universal precautions
Working knowledge of laboratory procedures including phlebotomy
Working knowledge of medical terminology and clinical procedures
Working knowledge of health care maintenance and prevention
Working knowledge of state and federal guidelines for laboratories, biohazards, laboratory specimen collection and handling
Working knowledge of administrative support practices and procedures
Working knowledge of medical record-keeping procedures
Working knowledge of health and social services resources available in the community.
Working knowledge of learning and health education techniques and principles.
Willingness to give information and client education regarding reproductive health, emergency contraception and pregnancy options, including abortion referral.
Demonstrated ability to monitor, request, stock and clean routine clinic supplies; and maintain examination/ treatment rooms and laboratory areas
Demonstrated ability to make decisions within scope of position; can seek information; analyze and evaluate situations; define problems and implement appropriate action.
Skill in entering information for patient tracking registries.
Communication skills (oral and written) read, write and converse in the English language. Skilled in effectively communicating with teens and/or with non-English speaking clients utilizing interpreters and or skilled in a language/customs that enhances service delivery to our clients.
Skill in interviewing and recording client’s medical, dietary, and social history; anthropometric and lab results.
Basic computer/PC and basic mathematics skills
Demonstrated skill in working with racially, ethnically and socio-economically diverse populations.
Skill in performing a number of tasks simultaneously, meeting deadlines and working under time constraints.
Skill in working as a part of a multidisciplinary team Skilled in working on a multidisciplinary team that delivers a services to clients, interacts with the public and works with community partners.
Ability to obtain Washington State certification as a Health Care Assistant in categories A and E within six (6) months of hire, which requires:
1. One academic year of formal education at the post-secondary level at an accredited medical assisting school or the equivalent. Education shall include but not be limited to anatomy, physiology, pharmacological principles and medication administration, concepts of asepsis, and microbiology;
2. Adequate physical ability and sufficient manual dexterity to perform the requisite health care services.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants with previous experience as a medical assistant beyond externship are desired.
Applicants bilingual in English and Spanish are desired.
